Wine and Art Workshop – Introduction to Pastels Technique by Jim Smythe

Saturday, March 25th, 2017 – 2:00 – 5:30 pm.

Stonefield Cellars Winery is hosting a Wine & Art Event – “Introduction to Pastels Technique Workshop”   

Cost is  $45 – includes Wine Tasting, Souvenir Glass, Painting Supplies, and Instruction.

About Your Instructor: James (Jim) Smythe is a university-trained artist with a Master of Fine Arts degree. Jim has taught art on the adult level for almost 50 years. Jim’s experiences living in both the southern coastal and western NC mountain regions have been the inspirational source and subject of his works as a realist painter.           

Workshop Goals: This Pastel Workshop will be an informal, stress free and fun experience with the pastel medium. Jim will walk the class step by step through painting a beach scene while demonstrating the basic techniques of the medium and alerting you to the pitfalls. Tips will be given for ways that you can add your own imagination to the final painting. You may wish to bring photos that you have taken at the beach as reference.

Levels: Beginner to Intermediate

Materials:   A starter set of pastels and pastel paper will be provided. If you have some experience with pastels and have your own supplies, feel free to bring them to supplement what is provided. Jim will be using an easel to demonstrate so all can see. You can work on the flat tables that will be provided or you can bring a stand up easel or a table easel and support board.

The Genuine is a band that performs original, progressive folk rock.

The Genuine band members (Matthew Allivato, Katelyn Allivato, Devin Forkel) came together through a shared love for life and music and say “we look forward to sharing that with every person we meet”. They don’t play music to live, they live to play music.

Alan Bibey & Grasstowne is a band comprised of very well respected veterans of bluegrass music as well the finest young musicians in bluegrass today. This combination together makes Grasstowne one of the hottest and most energetic bands touring today! The band’s first two projects “The Road Headin’ Home” and “The Other Side of Towne” went to #1 and #2 respectively on the National Bluegrass Charts. The Road Headin’ home remained at #1 for three months and also won the 2008 “Album of the Year” award. Their project “Kickin’ Up Dust” hit in the top 5 on the singles and CD chart. The bands new album “Alan Bibey & Grasstowne 4″ has already yielded 2 huge chart hits, ” This Old Guitar and Me” and “Cold Dark Ground.” Bluegrass Today reviews the album saying, “Anyone who appreciates contemporary bluegrass played with precision, soul, and authority will want this one in their library.”

Jimbuktu started as a collaboration between Jim Tedder and Martin Buchanan in 2013. Performing original material from the beginning, the band has featured an array of guest musicians, most consistently Laura Black as percussionist. The latest additions are Joe Hilton on drums and Michael Zeoli on bass. The music is a blend of influences of the primary writers, Martin and Jim. Martin writes alternative, country and Americana songs, influenced by every song ever written by anybody. Jim creates R&B influenced alt rock songs. The group features lyric-driven songs with a good helping of rhythm and harmonies.

Open the Door for Three is a trio that plays its Irish music powerfully.

They mine tune books, collections, and recordings for old and new tunes and songs. They add to those discoveries fiddler Liz Knowles’s compositions, harmonies, and arrangements, Kieran O’Hare’s encyclopedic knowledge of tunes and the uilleann piping tradition, and the rhythmic bedrock bouzouki and world-class singing of Dublin-born Pat Broaders.

The trio’s members are veterans and mainstays of the Irish music scene around the world, having played with Riverdance, Cherish the Ladies, Secret Garden, Anúna, Liz Carroll, and The New York Pops, as well as with artists like Don Henley, Paula Cole, Bonnie Raitt, and Josh Groban. They have performed around the world: on Broadway, at Carnegie Hall and the Kennedy Center, at L’Olympia and the Palais des Congrès in Paris, in Malaysian rainforest festivals, in theatres from Shanghai to São Paulo, and even a bullring in Mallorca.
