HARMONY SINGING with Cathy Fink & Sam Gleaves
We will focus on two and three part harmony singing starting with “how do I find my part” and moving on up to some group harmonizing on familiar songs. The Homespun Tapes course “Learn to Sing Harmony” will act as a text, but you don’t need to bring that to this session. We will be learning by ear and singing together from the start. We will also learn exercises and ways of practicing harmony that build confidence. Bring voice, ears and a relaxed smile and you’ll be singing harmony in no time. ALL LEVELS. The only requirement is a desire to sing harmony with others. Learn to Sing Harmony
Marcy Marxer will be conducting a Ukulele Workshop concurrent to the Harmony Singing Workshop (see separate event listing on our calendar). Cathy, Sam, and Marcy will then come together for a wonderful evening concert of Traditional and Contemporary Appalachian Music for a rehearsal dinner in the evening from 7:30-9:30pm. The rehearsal dinner host has graciously opened up concert seats for workshop attendees if they would like to attend the evening concert; concert tickets may be purchased as a separate ticket below. (There will be an hour+ break between the workshop & concert where workshop attendees staying for the concert may leave to eat dinner, or join the staff & musicians in ordering food for delivery.)
We strongly encourage you to register for the workshop in advance as spots will fill up fast! And concert tickets must be purchased in advance. Tickets may be purchased Online (see below), Over the Phone at 336-644-9908, or In Person at the winery during Business Hours.
Cathy Fink & Marcy Marxer have received 14 consecutive GRAMMY nominations and two GRAMMY Awards. They’ve traveled to China, Malaysia, Papua New Guinea and Vanuatu as cultural ambassadors of the U.S. through the American Music Abroad program. Their 45th CD was released in February, “GET UP AND DO RIGHT”, focused on duo sounds with vocals, cello banjo, five-string banjo, ukulele and mandolin. The C.F. Martin Company honored them each with signature Martin Guitars. The Kala Ukulele company created the Marcy Marxer model tenor ukulele. National Steel Guitars built a new Tenor Steel Guitar in her honor. After seeing some youtube clips of Marcy playing the Cello Banjo, the Gold Tone Company created and marketed the Marcy Marxer model cello banjo, now played by Ricky Skaggs, Tim O’Brien, Ry Cooder and many others. Sam will be joining Cathy in conducting the harmony singing workshop.
Sam Gleaves is one of the the brightest and best of a new generation. His songwriting is elegant, his fiddle/banjo/guitar playing masterful and his songs inspired Tim O’Brien, Laurie Lewis and Janis Ian to all participate in his first solo album.

**A bit of praise About “GET UP AND DO RIGHT”- Cathy & Marcy’s 45th Recording:
“With nothing more on board than the duo vocalizing with their strings and things, they give a master class in organic, acoustic music and show what a difference chops make when your ears have been jaded by wannabes and pretenders. If this doesn’t earn the duo another Grammy, someone’s not paying attention.” -Midwest Records
“As close to flawless folk/bluegrass as it gets.” – Billboard Magazine
“sublime musicianship” — Boston Globe
