SUMMARY:Friday Flavors Concert - Gailfean (Celtic)
DESCRIPTION:Gailfean Band returns to the Stonefield Cellars stage for an encore performance of the best that traditional Irish music can offer.  The all-star line-up includes guitarist Don Penzien\, Brian Conway on fiddle\, and John Whelan on accordian. \nAbout the Band:   \nBrian Conway– \nNew York born fiddler Brian Conway is a leading exponent of the tastefully ornamented Sligo fiddling style made famous by the late Michael Coleman. The winner of two All- Ireland junior titles in 1973 and 1974 and the All-Ireland senior championship of 1986\, Brian’s early studies were with his father Jim of Plumbridge\, County Tyrone and with Limerick born fiddler/teacher Martin Mulvihill. However\, it was the legendary fiddler and composer Martin Wynne who taught him the real secrets of the County Sligo style. Later\, Brian met and befriended the great Andy McGann of New York\, a direct student of Michael Coleman\, who further shaped his precision and skill on the instrument. \nIn 1979\, Brian recorded a duet album\, The Apple In Winter (Green Linnet) with fellow New York fiddler Tony Demarco. He released his debut solo CD\, First Through the Gate\, on the Smithsonian-Folkways label in July 2002. This CD was voted the Album of the Year by The Irish Echo. Brian is also featured on the CD\, My Love is in America\, recorded at the Boston College Irish Fiddle Festival\, and on the documentary Shore to Shore”which highlights traditional Irish music in New York. He is considered one of the musical rocks in the New York area. \nIn 2007\, Brian released a CD titled A Tribute to Andy McGann on the prestigious Irish Label Cló Iar-Chonnachta. This CD pairs up Irish music legends Joe Burke and Felix Dolan along with Brian in a CD which has received glowing accolades since its release in the summer of 2007. Brian followed this CD with a much-anticipated solo CD titled Consider the Source in deference to the rich environment from which Brian learned his music. This CD was released in 2008 on the Cló Iar-Chonnachta Label. This CD features guest appearances by music greats Niamh Parsons\, Dan Milner\, Billy McComiskey\, Joannie Madden\, Felix Dolan\, and Brendan Dolan. Earle Hitchner of the Irish Echo described this CD as “Easily one of the best releases this year.” Brian followed up that recording with the highly acclaimed Pride of New York\, and last year\, in 2017\, recorded with the group Gailfean\, featuring John Whelan\, Mairtin DeCogain and Don Penzien \nDon Penzien has long been a top-flight performer of Irish traditional music. He frequently is on the road playing concerts and festivals with various bands.  Widely recognized for his reserved backing style\, Don’s dexterous work on DADGAD-tuned guitar provides solid\, driving rhythms to traditional tunes as well as perceptive and sensitive accompaniments to songs and airs. \nDon is a Michigan native with strong roots in Irish culture and an affinity for Celtic music. Upon relocating south\, he found Mississippi sorely lacking as per its appreciation of the Irish and Scottish traditions native to many of the state’s citizens. So\, in 1992\, he founded and for 25 years he directed what has evolved into a much-revered celebration of traditional Celtic music and dance—CelticFest Mississippi. Don has now relocated to North Carolina (where he works as Professor of Psychiatry\, Anesthesiology and Neurology at the Wake Forest School of Medicine). \nJohn Whelan –  Seven-time all-Ireland champion John Whelan is one of the world’s best living Irish button accordion players. John was raised in the vibrant London Irish music scene of the 1970s\, and learned his craft from such legends as Lucy Farr\, Roger Sherlock\, Paddy Taylor\, Mick O Connor and his teacher Brendan Mulkaire. He moved to the USA in 1980 and has been inspiring Celtic musicians and fans ever since.   Along with his All-Ireland Championships\, he was twice awarded musician of the year from the Irish Music Association. He has over 15 CDs and has performed on Late Night with Conan Obrien. John Is also a sought-after composer and producer. His music has been featured on such TV shows as Sex in the City and History’s Mysteries and History Detective.  Currently John performs with the John Whelan Band and Gailfean. John has dedicated most of his life to delivering the gift of song through his accordion. \n  \nAdvance Ticket Purchase is Recommended: You will not receive physical tickets. Your name will be placed on a Pre-Paid Will-Call list at the Entrance Table; please have your ID available in case we need to confirm your ticket purchase. SUMMARY:Nature Hike followed by Winery Visit
DESCRIPTION: Nature Hike followed by Winery Visit   \nHike at Knight-Brown Nature Preserve (see map link below)- Meet at 9:30 a.m at the trail head (hike should be completed around noon) then after the hike we travel to nearby Stonefield Cellars Winery for a bring-your-own picnic lunch and wine tasting (or buy wine by the glass/bottle\, snacks\, beer and non-alcoholic beverages available also).  Wine tasting fees will need to be paid at the winery.  There is no fee to participate in the hike.  Natalie will share information about how you can support the Piedmont Land Conservancy\, the organization that is the steward for this beautiful property. \n\nEnjoy the late spring outdoors with a hike at Knight-Brown Nature Preserve\, just a few miles north-west of Stonefield Cellars Winery. Natalie will lead the hike at this beautiful nature preserve which includes multiple trail loops\, a few steep hills\, a beautiful creek\, and interpretive signs along the way. If all loops are hiked\, mileage will total 3.43. Number of loops hiked will be determined by group participants. Note: Difficulty is easy to ‘moderate’ (only because we will go up and down a couple of hills – it’s not flat the whole way!). You must RSVP if you plan to join this hike. Natalie will give you more information before the date. For those interested\, after the hike we will head to Stonefield Cellars Winery for a (bring-your-own) picnic lunch – and wine will be available for purchase of course! Please RSVP  to nwurz@stonefieldcellars.com\n  \nGoogle Maps Link to Trailhead \nAbout Your Nature Hike Guide  \nNatalie Wurz \n  Natalie Wurz is a nature lover that has spent a lifetime of pursuing outdoor adventures. Through the years as a College Outdoor Club Officer\, Girl Scout Leader and now Business Owner (Stonefield Cellars)\, she has led groups on hikes\, camp-outs\, and kayak/rafting trips in Georgia\, Utah\, and North Carolina.  With either a fishing rod\, paddle\, hiking stick\, or camera in hand\, Natalie is comfortable on land and water and is always eager to share her passion for the year round beauty of our natural world with others. Note:  The photo you see here was taken by the ox-bow of the creek beside the trail we will be walking at the Knight-Brown Nature Preserve! \nNatalie will lead you on a nature walk through the Knight-Brown Nature Preserve located in Stokesdale\, NC.   Difficulty of the trail is rated as Easy to Moderate.  You must be able to walk from 1-1/2 to 2 hours – we will stop and take photos and rest as necessary since some of the walk will be uphill.  Important!!!!   While there are bridges for crossing the creek\, some trail areas may be muddy if we’ve had recent rain\, and sometimes the trail may be slippery with leaves.  Therefore\, sturdy\, closed toe shoes are a must (no sandals or flip-flops).  Dress for the weather (wear layers\, bring a jacket).  If steady RAIN is in the forecast we will NOT go on the nature walk and will replace it with an INDOOR activity. \n*Times listed above are approximate as the nature walk end time will be effected by size of group and how often we stop for photos and rests. \nIf you have ANY questions about the hike or winery visit contact Natalie – 336-689-4071. \nFor more info about the nature preserve and Piedmont Land Conservancy\, click here

SUMMARY:Soup and Sing - Potluck Dinner and Jam Session
DESCRIPTION:Soup and Sing – Potluck Dinner and Jam Session \nLocation: Stonefield Cellars Winery  Start:  6:30pm  End:  10:30ish pm \n \nReservations for Soup and Sing are Required – Please call 336-644-9908. Soup & Sing is a combination pot-luck dinner\, jam session\, and folk gathering for local musicians/singers and music lovers that harkens back to a time when there were no radios or TVs and music was what we made together\, face to face\, an essential part of our soul as necessary as the food that nourished our bodies.   Many different genres of music may be represented during the evening (bluegrass\, celtic\, blues\, folk\, rock\, gospel\, etc.)\, but usually it is acoustic (we do mike vocals though\, so singers can be heard).  Even if you are not a musician as long as you’re a fan of Stonefield Cellars that loves wine and music\, you are welcome to come.   We appreciate your support of local music and local wine!  (Wine sales provide the financial support to make this event possible.) \n \nNote:  For this particular Soup and Sing\, we will be remembering Warren Ludlam\, a musician friend that regularly attended Soup and Sing along with Tunes on Tuesday jams\, concerts\, and other events at the winery over the years.  Warren suddenly passed away recently\, and we will be singing for him and lifting our hearts with memories of him. Family and friends of Warren’s are especially invited to attend as we know that’s what he would have wanted! \nIf you are interested in attending\, RSVP at 644-9908 or email nwurz@stonefieldcellars.com or RSVP below.  (Email or call if you need more information about the evening).
