They will also take you behind the scenes and learn what inspires their compositions, the stories behind the songs and the process of song writing through each songwriter’s eyes and experience. It is an interactive event and audience participation is encouraged (but please be respectful and don’t converse with your neighbor while the artists are speaking or singing).
Songwriters featured 3/12/17
Dave Cecil started writing on the piano at age 6. Putting notes together just seemed to make sense to him. He began writing lyrics shortly after and while secretly playing one of his brother’s guitars he wrote his first song. Through the years he has developed a style all his own and totally original. Dave now on his 3rd record, plays & performs his original style of music regularly throughout the Southeast in collaboration with guitarist Jack King.
Singer/songwriter Abigail Dowd grew up under the longleaf pine trees in North Carolina and comes from a long line of musicians. She taught herself to play the guitar at age 14 and went on to study classical guitar with Danny Infantino.
In 2009, with a duffle bag and her guitar, Abigail moved to Florence, Italy, and then to Maine, where she spent five years writing songs and developing her own style. Her bluesy voice has been described as “at once strong and generous in its vulnerability.” Abigail has written and performed music for the cultural theater performance Bleeding Pines of Turpentine as well as for documentary film and shorts. Her debut album Don’t Wake Me was released in January 2017.
Songwriter Benjy Johnson has been writing, producing and playing music for over 20 years. He has released 3 records of original material over 15 years under the band name Benj-o-Matic and written scores of songs that didn’t make or to those band releases. His latest release is with his band The Sonic Prophets. All his releases are avilable on iTunes and all digital media outlets. He owns and operates Earthtones Recording Studio in Greensboro NC and serves as co-writer, engineer and producer on many fine releases from there. Songwriter Bobbie Needham grew up in Greensboro for the most part but left after graduating from UNC/G. After years away she’s back to find that Greensboro is “…just full of music” and that it is so good to be home. Realizing the vicarious musical life provided by her musician daughters would end as they fledged, Bobbie began playing guitar, singing and eventually writing her own songs. Initially drawn to country, honky-tonk and bluegrass, she has edged her way into her current favorites – blues and swing. Inspiration comes to her “from odd words found in crossword puzzles, comments overheard by hopefully discrete eavesdropping and ideas wafting through the clouds just waiting to be noticed and claimed”. Bobbie also says that “Sharing the “aha!” realizations that come with time just on the off chance it might save someone else some missteps is the best part. Sometimes singing it aloud makes things clear in a way speaking cannot.”
