Soup and Sing – Potluck Dinner and Jam Session

Reservations are Required for this Event

Soup & Sing is a combination pot-luck dinner, jam session, and folk gathering for local musicians/singers and music lovers that harkens back to a time when there were no radios or TVs and music was what we made together, face to face, an essential part of our soul as necessary as the food that nourished our bodies. Many different genres of music may be represented during the evening (bluegrass, celtic, blues, folk, rock, gospel, etc.), but usually it is acoustic (we do mike vocals though, so singers can be heard). Even if you are not a musician as long as you’re a fan of Stonefield Cellars that loves wine and music, you are welcome to come. We appreciate your support of local music and local wine! (Wine sales provide the financial support to make this event possible.)

Large Parties/Groups Policy: Due to our policy to preserve the intimacy of the gathering and the need to stay within our capacity limit, Soup & Sing is not an event for large private parties or groups (more than 8 people in a single party/group). We do however rent our barrel room for private parties and we can provide you with contact info re: bands for hire. We also hold barrel room concerts and outdoor music events at the winery during which we can provide concert/festival seating for large groups.

High Lonesome Strings Monthly Meeting (FREE Bluegrass Concert and Jam)

Stonefield Cellars hosts another High Lonesome Strings Bluegrass Association Monthly Meeting, featuring member band The Southern Gentlemen (see details below).

Note: A brief annual board/officers election will be held prior to the concert, followed by a jam session with band members and other local bluegrass musicians. This is event is FREE to the public!

Event will be held INSIDE our air-conditioned Barrel Room.

The Southern Gentlemen

JOHNNY JOHNSON – FOUNDER , GUITAR , LEAD VOCALIST – COLLINSVILLE , VIRGINIA

Started playing Mandolin professional as a youth with several groups before founding The Southern Gentlemen in May of 1999 Switching to Guitar, Lead Vocalist and Manager, M.C. for the Group. Songwriter and President of Woodchopper Music Publishing BMI . He has Written Over 600 Songs, many of which are featured on The Southern Gentlemen Show. Johnny’s distinctive vocal and guitar style are the core behind The Southern Gentlemen Sound.

BOBBY WHITLOCK – BANJO , FINGER PICKED GUITAR , LEAD AND HARMONY VOCALIST – FIELDALE ,VIRGINIA

Started Playing Banjo as an Early Youth in many regional bands throughout the Virginia Area later joining as a founding member of The Fork Mountain Grass in the 1970’s playing the festival circuit through the 1980’s. Bobby also performed with The Churchmen Gospel group. Bobby joined The Southern Gentlemen in 2007 and continues to contribute his songwriting talent to the band’s repertoire.

BURGESS HURD – MANDOLIN – LEAD AND HARMONY VOCALIST, MARTINSVILLE , VIRGINIA

Joining the band in 2014, Burgess is a fine Mandolinist and Tenor singer-songwriter with over fifty years of performing experience in the fields of Bluegrass and Bluegrass Gospel. Burgess handles Public Relations, Album Design, and band website.

BILL LESTER – ELECTRIC BASS – LEAD AND HARMONY VOCALIST , MARTINSVILLE , VIRGINIA

Bassist and Vocalist playing in many groups over the years, Bill joined The Southern Gentlemen in 2021. Bill is a fine asset to the group.

Taking our Soup & Sing to the next level, Stonefield Cellars is hosting the High Lonesome Strings Bluegrass Association’s Spring Camp & Pick Event. This event will be held rain or shine (we won’t have a fire going if it is raining though). Here’s all the details…

Saturday & Sunday, April 18-19, 2020

Let’s JAM, JAM, JAM!!!!

Saturday: Pot Luck Dinner at 6:30 pm

Plates and utensils will be provided; you provide a main dish, side dish or dessert and your drink.

Beverages will be available for purchase.

Note: There will not be a band performance Saturday night. This is a JAM focused event!

Jams will be held inside and outside (until 10pm, must move inside after that).

Weather permitting, fire pit seating on the patio will accommodate s’mores.

Camping Option: Limited RV camping available (2 spots w/ power, water, a few more spaces with no power/water, no dumping on property), but plenty of room for tent camping! All overnight guests must preregister (call Natalie @ 336-689-4071).

Campers are encouraged to join in a potluck breakfast and Gospel Jam Sunday morning.

About Brandon Lee Adams:

Brandon Lee Adams is an up and coming artist from the mountains, hills, and valleys of Appalachia. Tracing his musical roots from traditional gospel music all the way to Folk, Bluegrass, Jazz, and Blues. Never assuming one clear path or direction but moving where the music leads. Recording with iconic artists like Tony Rice, Carl Jackson, and Scott Vestal, along with appearing on two Grammy nominated albums and one IBMA award winning album “Celebration of Life”, Brandon has laid a solid foundation for a long career.

Barrel Room Concert Etiquette Reminder: This concert is held in our intimate barrel room and is intended to be a listening experience. Audience is expected to be respectful of the artist’s performance and their listening neighbors, so loud talking and cell phone use is discouraged during quiet songs, but Dancing, Clapping, etc. is welcomed during upbeat songs (take your cue from the band and those around you!).

Venue Policies: No outside alcohol, no pets, NO Smoking property.

Concert tickets are non-refundable.

One of the great things about our Barrel Room is the intimate setting it provides so that you will be able to experience Sideline’s playing up close, ‘front and center’ (pun intended, see below). Sideline is a pedigreed six-piece powerhouse whose style has set the pace in Bluegrass for over two decades. Founders Steve Dilling, Skip Cherryholmes and Jason Moore can all claim their own historical significance to the genre as members of highly awarded groups, multiple Grand Ole Opry appearances and years of national and international touring.

What started as a side project for the seasoned players soon moved to the front and center as the three were joined by talents of Bailey Coe; guitar, Zack Arnold; mandolin, and Daniel Greeson; fiddle, and began to record and release albums in earnest.

To listen to Sideline reminds the fan of why so many people fall in love with Bluegrass in the first place; pulse-pounding drive, songs sung from the heart, perfected timing and dynamics as well as a visceral emotion in the rendering. A band that was started as an off-season fun experiment has become a full-time dream team of players and singers.

FOOD: As there is no food vendor for this concert we recommend eating beforehand. Outside food is allowed in small quantities (think snacks, small plates, or tapas), but please be considerate of other guests- don’t bring smelly or pungent food items. We will also be selling snacks such as cheese, crackers, peanuts, and a wide assortment of locally-made chocolate for dessert during the evening!
