Barrel Room Concert – Randal Bays with Don Penzien

By

Saturday, March 8th, 2025 –  Randal Bays and Don Penzien perform an intimate Barrel Room Concert at Stonefield Cellars Winery – 7:30-9:30pm  (Door opens at 7:00pm for wine purchases and seating)

We celebrate our own Scotch-Irish heritage this month by bringing you a  real deal, traditional style Irish music concert performed by two master instrumentalists in Fiddle and Guitar.

Tickets are $25 (Reserved Table Seating) or $20 (General Admission Chair seating).

Randal Bays is an American born, Irish style fiddler and guitarist who brings power and passion to the old tradition. He’s devoted many years to learning not just the tunes, but more importantly the feeling of Irish traditional music as handed down by the many great players and music lovers past and present. He renders the music with an intensity not commonly heard in any genre, powered by a deep love of the music, the culture, and a heartfelt wish to share this magnificent tradition with audiences.

“A commanding presence on the fiddle.” – The Irish Times

“His playing has power and passion… simply a joy to listen to.” – Dirty Linen Magazine

“Randal Bays is one of the few Americans to have mastered the complex art of traditional Irish fiddling.” – Gearoid O hAllmhurain (author of “A Pocket History of Irish Traditional Music”)

“Bays is a rare beast, a true master of both fiddle and guitar.”

– Cork Examiner (Ireland)

As a guitarist, he is acclaimed thusly by other Celtic style masters:

Tony McManus – “My first awareness of Randal was the exquisite backing he provided to Martin Hayes landmark debut album- guitar playing so precise, so appropriate that I studied it in great detail. Only later did I get the full measure of Mr Bays’ phenomenal musicality both as a player of guitar as melody instrument and also as an excellent fiddler in command of a huge repertoire of tunes both familiar and not so. As a guitarist Randal brings to bear a deep and grounded understanding of the essence of the tune as well as fabulous technique. Indeed, these work together to produce great music that is both original and idiomatic. This is a serious contribution to making the guitar sing within the tradition we love. Good on ye!”

Daithi Sproule – “Randal’s apparently effortless command of the guitar, profound knowledge of the music, and impeccable taste and flair form, in my opinion, a combination unequalled in the field of Irish/Celtic music

Don Penzien

Don Penzien has long been a top-flight performer of Irish traditional music. He frequently is on the road playing concerts and festivals with Haley Richardson, Gailfean, Brian Conway, Gerry O’Connor, and The Máirtín de Cógáin Project, and he has served as accompanist for numerous other well-known performers (e.g., Seán Gavin, Randal Bays, Máirtín de Cógáin, John Whelan, Tim Britton, John Williams, Pat Broaders, Gabe Donohue, Ben Jaber, Tony DeMarco, Billy McComiskey, Sean Clohessy, Bridget Fitzgerald, Kevin Doyle). Widely recognized for his reserved backing style, Don’s dexterous work on DADGAD-tuned guitar provides solid, driving rhythms to traditional tunes as well as perceptive and sensitive accompaniments to songs and airs. Don is a Michigan native with strong roots in Irish culture and an affinity for Celtic music. He now resides in NC where he works as Professor at the Wake Forest School of Medicine.

Barrel Room Concert – Haley Richardson & Don Penzien with Friends

By

Friday, October 4th, 2024 –  Haley Richardson & Don Penzien with Special Guests perform an intimate Barrel Room Concert at Stonefield Cellars Winery – 7:30-9:30pm  (Door opens at 7:00pm for wine purchases and seating)

Tickets are $25 (Reserved Table Seating) or $20 (General Admission Chair seating).

Irish traditional music and dance in a listening and up-close watching room setting!

First joining forces on a festival stage in 2017, Haley and Don toured regularly together until Haley took up the mantle as core musician (fiddler) for Riverdance. Taking advantage of Haley’s brief fall hiatus from Riverdance, the duo is once again joining forces (along with special guests, including dancer Will Bryant and harmonica ace Steve Payne).  This will be their kick-off concert for an unforgettable series of shows across the US.

Haley Richardson: With her highly ornamented and virtuosic style of playing, Haley launched her opening salvo in the Irish music world at 6 years of age when she won the under 12 All Ireland qualifier. She has since amassed a long list of All Ireland and other championship titles (solo fiddle and slow airs) and has performed the world over. Whether performing in a solo capacity or in an ensemble, Haley brings a rare dynamism and energy to her music, which is informed by her thorough knowledge of the Sligo fiddle style, her mastery of her instrument, and the trailblazing and show-stopping technique and emotion evident in every note she plays. Currently the fiddler for the 25th Anniversary world tour of the Grammy Award winning production, RIVERDANCE, Haley has performed with many of the best-known Irish musicians including The Chieftains, Altan, Dervish, Mick Moloney and Green Fields of America, Pride of New York, Liz Carroll with Cherish the Ladies, John Whelan, Paddy Keenan, and The Máirtín de Cógáin Project.

Don is a Michigan native with strong roots in Irish culture and an affinity for Celtic music. He now resides in NC where he works as Professor at the Wake Forest School of Medicine.

SPECIAL GUESTS!!!

Will Bryant

Born in Sydney, Australia, Will trained with the Halloran Dance School in Irish, ballet, contemporary and tap from the age of four. Will performed lead roles in musical productions and made regular appearances on TV. At university he studied for a Bachelor of Music and is an accomplished guitarist. An ambitious athlete, Will is studying personal training on and off tour. Following an impressive competitive Irish dance career, placing top-three internationally and winning state and national titles, he performed with Celtic Illusion and Heartbeat of Home. In 2014 he joined Riverdance and has toured worldwide.

Steven Payne

Steve Payne has been sharing his talent on harmonica and Irish flute on stages across the USA and beyond, adding texture and depth to the Irish traditional music scene.

Friday Flavors Concert – Gailfean (Celtic)

By

GAILFEAN

IRISH TRADITIONAL MUSIC AT ITS BEST!

For this concert, GAILFEAN is comprised of

Don Penzien, Brian Conway, and John Whelan

Don Penzien has long been a top-flight performer of Irish traditional music. He frequently is on the road playing concerts and festivals with Gailfean, The Máirtín de Cógáin Project, and Shared Madness (featuring Haley Richardson & Megan Irby). Upon relocating south, he found Mississippi sorely lacking as per its appreciation of the Irish and Scottish traditions native to many of the state’s citizens. So, in 1992, he founded and for 25 years he directed what has evolved into a much-revered celebration of traditional Celtic music and dance—CelticFest Mississippi. Don has now relocated to North Carolina (where he works as Professor of Psychiatry, Anesthesiology and Neurology at the Wake Forest School of Medicine).

Brian Conway is a New York born fiddler and a leading exponent of the tastefully ornamented Sligo fiddling style made famous by the late Michael Coleman. The winner of two All- Ireland junior titles in 1973 and 1974 and the All-Ireland senior championship of 1986, Brian’s early studies were with his father Jim of Plumbridge, County Tyrone and with Limerick born fiddler/teacher Martin Mulvihill. However, it was the legendary fiddler and composer Martin Wynne who taught him the real secrets of the County Sligo style. Later, Brian met and befriended the great Andy McGann of New York, a direct student of Michael Coleman, who further shaped his precision and skill on the instrument.  In 1979, Brian recorded a duet album, The Apple In Winter (Green Linnet) with fellow New York fiddler Tony Demarco. He released his debut solo CD, First Through the Gate, on the Smithsonian-Folkways label in July 2002. This CD was voted the Album of the Year by The Irish Echo. Brian is also featured on the CD, My Love is in America, recorded at the Boston College Irish Fiddle Festival, and on the documentary Shore to Shore”which highlights traditional Irish music in New York. He is considered one of the musical rocks in the New York area. Subsequent CD’s released on the prestigious Irish Label Cló Iar-Chonnachta included A Tribute to Andy McGann (2007), and Consider the Source (2008).  These well received recordings were followed by Pride of New York, and then Won’t You Come Out Tonight (2017),  the debut CD for Gailfean. Brian is considered one of the musical rocks in the New York area.

John Whelan –  Seven-time all-Ireland champion John Whelan is one of the world’s best living Irish button accordion players. John was raised in the vibrant London Irish music scene of the 1970s, and learned his craft from such legends as Lucy Farr, Roger Sherlock, Paddy Taylor, Mick O Connor and his teacher Brendan Mulkaire. He moved to the USA in 1980 and has been inspiring Celtic musicians and fans ever since.   Along with his All-Ireland Championships, he was twice awarded musician of the year from the Irish Music Association. He has over 15 CDs and has performed on Late Night with Conan Obrien. John Is also a sought-after composer and producer. His music has been featured on such TV shows as Sex in the City and History’s Mysteries and History Detective.  Currently John performs with the John Whelan Band and Gailfean. John has dedicated most of his life to delivering the gift of song through his accordion.
