Stonefield Cellars is so pleased to bring back “Sean Gavin and Friends”!  Sean, accompanied by his brother, Michael Gavin, and friend Don Penzien, compose our Celtic band offering this season.  See bios and examples of their music in their respective website links below.

Uilleann piper and flute player SEAN GAVIN is one of the most highly regarded Irish musicians of his generation. In 2016 he became the first and only musician born outside Ireland to win the prestigious Seán Ó Riada Gold Medal, and his most recent recording was hailed by The Irish Echo as “traditional music at its best!” He is among the most highly sought instructors of Irish music and has taught at institutions around the world. He now serves as Director of the Swannanoa Gathering’s Celtic Week.

Michael Gavin

Fiddle, Banjo, Guitar, Bouzouki, Mandolin & Singing

Michael Gavin has been playing and teaching Irish music for over 30 years. He grew up in an environment rich in traditional music where he learned from his father, Co. Clare fiddler Mick Gavin. A member of popular Detroit-based band Blackthorn, Michael has regularly shared the stage with such greats as Liz Carroll, Kevin Burke, and Ashley MacIsaac. He is a virtuoso multi-instrumentalist, with a mastery of guitar, fiddle, banjo, bouzouki, and vocals. No stranger to the art of teaching, Michael is also a professor of philosophy, with degrees from the University of Michigan and Wayne State University. His pupils, both musical and otherwise, have gone on to great achievements throughout the USA, Ireland, and beyond

Don Penzien Don Penzien has long been a top-flight performer of Irish traditional music. He frequently is on the road playing concerts and festivals with Haley Richardson, Gailfean, Brian Conway, Gerry O’Connor, and The Máirtín de Cógáin Project, and he has served as accompanist for numerous other well-known performers (e.g., Seán Gavin, Randal Bays, Máirtín de Cógáin, John Whelan, Tim Britton, John Williams, Pat Broaders, Gabe Donohue, Ben Jaber, Tony DeMarco, Billy McComiskey, Sean Clohessy, Bridget Fitzgerald, Kevin Doyle). Widely recognized for his reserved backing style, Don’s dexterous work on DADGAD-tuned guitar provides solid, driving rhythms to traditional tunes as well as perceptive and sensitive accompaniments to songs and airs. Don is a Michigan native with strong roots in Irish culture and an affinity for Celtic music. He now resides in NC where he works as Professor at the Wake Forest School of Medicine.

Advance Ticket Purchase is Recommended: You will not receive physical tickets. Your name will be placed on a Pre-Paid Will-Call list at the Entrance Table; please have your ID available in case we need to confirm your ticket purchase. If you have any questions regarding tickets you can reach us over the phone at 336-644-9908 during regular business hours (12-6pm Thurs-Sat & 1-6pm Sun).  NOTE: If you are using a mobile device to order tickets, you will need to be in ‘landscape’ mode (i.e., turn your phone sideways) so that you can view all fields for entering in your information.

EVENT TIMELINE:   Concert is from 7-9 (or a wee bit later) pm. The Food Truck will be ready to serve by 6:30 pm. Guests may arrive at any time prior to the concert.  Please proceed to the Tasting Room to check in.

INSIDE OR OUT?: This concert will be held INSIDE in our intimate, air-conditioned Barrel Room.  This concert is more of a listening room experience.  Seating is very limited, so advance purchase is recommended.

SEATING:

VIP Table Seating $20 per person

GA Chair seating $15 per person

DRINKS:   Wine, Fresh Sangria, Beer, and non-alcoholic beverages will be available for purchase.

FOOD:  JJ’s Cuban Kitchen – Cuban Sandwiches and Plates

Concert tickets are non-refundable.

AFTER 3PM day of show, Tickets will only be available at the DOOR.  As this concert is held in our Barrel Room, seating is limited.  If you are wanting tickets after 3PM day of show, please call to make sure seats are available before you drive out, as this show may sell out!
