Soup and Sing – Potluck Dinner and Jam Session

By

Reservations are Required for this Event

Soup & Sing is a combination pot-luck dinner, jam session, and folk gathering for local musicians/singers and music lovers that harkens back to a time when there were no radios or TVs and music was what we made together, face to face, an essential part of our soul as necessary as the food that nourished our bodies.   Many different genres of music may be represented during the evening (bluegrass, celtic, blues, folk, rock, gospel, etc.), but usually it is acoustic (we do mike vocals though, so singers can be heard).  Even if you are not a musician as long as you’re a fan of Stonefield Cellars that loves wine and music, you are welcome to come.   We appreciate your support of local music and local wine!  (Wine sales provide the financial support to make this event possible.)

Large Parties/Groups Policy:  Due to our policy to preserve the intimacy of the gathering and the need to stay within our capacity limit, Soup & Sing is not an event for large private parties or groups (more than 8 people in a single party/group).   We do however rent our barrel room for private parties and we can provide you with contact info re: bands for hire.   We also hold barrel room concerts and outdoor music events at the winery during which we can provide concert/festival seating for large groups.

Friday Flavors Concert – Sean Gavin and Friends (Irish Trad., Folk)

By

Stonefield Cellars is so pleased to bring back  Sean Gavin and Don Penzien, with fiddle player Liz Hanley as our Celtic band offering this season.  See bios and examples of their music in their respective website links below.

Sean Gavin

Uilleann piper and flute player Seán Gavin is one of the most highly regarded Irish musicians of his generation. In 2016 he became the first and only musician born outside Ireland to win the prestigious Seán Ó Riada Gold Medal, and his most recent recording was hailed by The Irish Echo as “traditional music at its best!” He is among the most highly sought instructors of Irish music and has taught at institutions around the world. He now serves as Director of the Swannanoa Gathering’s Celtic Week.

https://www.seangavinmusic.com/about/

Don Penzien Don Penzien has long been a top-flight performer of Irish traditional music. He frequently is on the road playing concerts and festivals with Haley Richardson, Gailfean, Brian Conway, Gerry O’Connor, and The Máirtín de Cógáin Project, and he has served as accompanist for numerous other well-known performers (e.g., Seán Gavin, Randal Bays, Máirtín de Cógáin, John Whelan, Tim Britton, John Williams, Pat Broaders, Gabe Donohue, Ben Jaber, Tony DeMarco, Billy McComiskey, Sean Clohessy, Bridget Fitzgerald, Kevin Doyle). Widely recognized for his reserved backing style, Don’s dexterous work on DADGAD-tuned guitar provides solid, driving rhythms to traditional tunes as well as perceptive and sensitive accompaniments to songs and airs. Don is a Michigan native with strong roots in Irish culture and an affinity for Celtic music. He now resides in NC where he works as Professor at the Wake Forest School of Medicine.

She attended the New England Conservatory Preparatory School and then undertook Irish studies at NYU with Dr. Mick Moloney. She frequently toured as a member of Moloney’s Green Fields of America as well as the progressive folk rock ensemble Frogbelly and Symphony.
