Barrel Room Concert – Haley Richardson & Don Penzien with Friends

By

Friday, October 4th, 2024 –  Haley Richardson & Don Penzien with Special Guests perform an intimate Barrel Room Concert at Stonefield Cellars Winery – 7:30-9:30pm  (Door opens at 7:00pm for wine purchases and seating)

Tickets are $25 (Reserved Table Seating) or $20 (General Admission Chair seating).

Irish traditional music and dance in a listening and up-close watching room setting!

First joining forces on a festival stage in 2017, Haley and Don toured regularly together until Haley took up the mantle as core musician (fiddler) for Riverdance. Taking advantage of Haley’s brief fall hiatus from Riverdance, the duo is once again joining forces (along with special guests, including dancer Will Bryant and harmonica ace Steve Payne).  This will be their kick-off concert for an unforgettable series of shows across the US.

Haley Richardson: With her highly ornamented and virtuosic style of playing, Haley launched her opening salvo in the Irish music world at 6 years of age when she won the under 12 All Ireland qualifier. She has since amassed a long list of All Ireland and other championship titles (solo fiddle and slow airs) and has performed the world over. Whether performing in a solo capacity or in an ensemble, Haley brings a rare dynamism and energy to her music, which is informed by her thorough knowledge of the Sligo fiddle style, her mastery of her instrument, and the trailblazing and show-stopping technique and emotion evident in every note she plays. Currently the fiddler for the 25th Anniversary world tour of the Grammy Award winning production, RIVERDANCE, Haley has performed with many of the best-known Irish musicians including The Chieftains, Altan, Dervish, Mick Moloney and Green Fields of America, Pride of New York, Liz Carroll with Cherish the Ladies, John Whelan, Paddy Keenan, and The Máirtín de Cógáin Project.

Don Penzien has long been a top-flight performer of Irish traditional music. He frequently is on the road playing concerts and festivals with Haley Richardson, Gailfean, Brian Conway, Gerry O’Connor, and The Máirtín de Cógáin Project, and he has served as accompanist for numerous other well-known performers (e.g., Seán Gavin, Randal Bays, Máirtín de Cógáin, John Whelan, Tim Britton, John Williams, Pat Broaders, Gabe Donohue, Ben Jaber, Tony DeMarco, Billy McComiskey, Sean Clohessy, Bridget Fitzgerald, Kevin Doyle). Widely recognized for his reserved backing style, Don’s dexterous work on DADGAD-tuned guitar provides solid, driving rhythms to traditional tunes as well as perceptive and sensitive accompaniments to songs and airs. Don is a Michigan native with strong roots in Irish culture and an affinity for Celtic music. He now resides in NC where he works as Professor at the Wake Forest School of Medicine.

SPECIAL GUESTS!!!

Will Bryant

Born in Sydney, Australia, Will trained with the Halloran Dance School in Irish, ballet, contemporary and tap from the age of four. Will performed lead roles in musical productions and made regular appearances on TV. At university he studied for a Bachelor of Music and is an accomplished guitarist. An ambitious athlete, Will is studying personal training on and off tour. Following an impressive competitive Irish dance career, placing top-three internationally and winning state and national titles, he performed with Celtic Illusion and Heartbeat of Home. In 2014 he joined Riverdance and has toured worldwide.

Steven Payne

Steve Payne has been sharing his talent on harmonica and Irish flute on stages across the USA and beyond, adding texture and depth to the Irish traditional music scene.

Barrel Room Concert by Guitar Master Hiroya Tsukamoto

By

Saturday, March 30, 2024 –  Guitar Master Hiroya Tsukamoto performs an intimate Barrel Room Concert at Stonefield Cellars Winery – 7:30-9:30pm  (Door opens at 7:00pm for wine purchases and seating)

Tickets are $30 in advance ($35 at door) – non-wine club member price.

Wine Club Member price is $25 in advance ($30 at door)

Stonefield Cellars is excited to introduce to you the guitar mastery of Hiroya Tsukamoto.  We are so happy to have a listening room environment that helps you experience his talent in a small, intimate setting.

“Eclectic, immersive and mesmerizing; guitarist and songwriter Hiroya Tsukamoto embodies the notion that music has no language: Beautifully raw and cathartically emotional, Tsukamoto is a world-renowned, self-made musician.”

Bio:

Hiroya Tsukamoto is a Japanese-born fingerstyle guitarist who moved to the United States in 2000 to attend the Berklee College of Music. Needless to say, he’s not only a dizzyingly agile fingerpicker, but a soulful and transcendent performer, with compositions that combine instrumental guitar work with lyrical performance and spoken stories from his life.

Tsukamoto has been recognized for his talents on stages such as at Blue Note in New York City, Japanese National Television and United Nations, and by scoring second place at the International Fingerstyle Guitar Championship both in 2018 and 2022.

Quotes:

“Fingerpicking is delicate, fluid, and beautifully detailed” -Acoustic Guitar magazine

“Hiroya Tsukamoto has an orchestra at his fingertips” -Lansing City Pulse

“Hiroya Tsukamoto takes us to an impressionistic journey ” -Boston Herald

Fingerstyle Guitar Workshop and Concert with Pierre Bensusan

By

The Workshop and Concert is now  SOLD OUT!!!!!

Saturday, February 24, 2024 –  Workshop is from 4-6pm  Concert is 7:30-9:30pm

A GUITAR WORKSHOP WITH PIERRE BENSUSAN – $50 per person (excludes taxes and processing fees)

Pierre Bensusan’s workshops are open to any guitarist, from every musical horizon, who has already attained a competent technical level.

Level : intermediate, advanced

Content

Pierre addresses issues of musicianship, philosophy of music, approach to the guitar, lots of techniques, ear training and so forth. All together, it’s about “Music for Guitar” in Fingerstyle, whatever the tuning. Pierre’s classes are based on a large concept which is that, whatever the style, and whether you’d like to focus on interprating, improvising or composing, we need to fulfill the process of expressing music on the instrument. This is analysed and optimized throughout the length of the class by going deep into various right hand and left hand techniques, body position, posture, exercises, ornementations, rythmic attention, tone, expression, interpretation, arranging,  and so forth.

Pierre plays in DADGAD tuning but while the seminar is not about DADGAD per se, Pierre will share his experience of this tuning. As far as students reading music or tabs, it’s only a small part of what goes on at the workshop but would still help if you can read at least the tablature.

COMMENTS FROM A STUDENT:

“I was a little apprehensive, thinking it might only be for “masters”, or professional musicians. After all, I’m just a graphic designer who loves guitar. The class attracted players on all levels. There was a really accomplished player who missed a gig at a nearby festival in order to get there, also a very young kid who showed up with an electric guitar. And everything in between.

At one point Pierre had us working on finger control, doing what should have been a very basic and simple 2 finger exercise. It was disturbing how much I was struggling with it (after all, I thought I was a fingerpicker). Meanwhile, the little kid next to me had it nailed!

Pierre was sensitive to each and every one of us. He treated us all as equals, and answered all our questions. There was one-on-one interaction with all who attended. Being in a small group setting, and hearing the thoughts of this man who has taken the artistry of fingerstyle guitar so far, was a deep inspiration.

Each of us, all at our different levels, walked away with a valuable experience. And so much to think about, you could pick and choose what to work on. The advanced players were challenged. But in many ways, I think those with the least experience may have had the most to gain. I wish I had an opportunity like that back when I was a teenager, teaching myself to play.

If you have the opportunity to attend one of Pierre’s master classes, drop what you’re doing, grab your guitar – be there!!!”
