About Hanz Araki
Considered one of the most talented Irish musicians in America today, flautist, whistle player, singer, and Juno Award-winner Hanz Araki has been lauded by publications and audiences alike. Three decades of musical exploration into Irish, Scottish, Japanese, and American traditions has yielded his distinct style described by The Irish Echo as “brilliantly expressive.”
“Hanz Araki is a master of his art – of that there is no doubt. His stunning musicianship and mind-spinning delivery of traditional tunes is a pure exhilaration for the ears. Combining an unprecedented feel for the Japanese shakuhachi flute with an unerring ability as an interpreter of Celtic music, Araki has carved out a rock-solid status. Fashioned through a heritage of Irish and Japanese parental influence, education, and personal dedication, his musical influences combine the disciplines and traditions of both cultures to create the virtuoso we hear today.”
In 2019, Araki celebrated 30 years of performing with a new album At Our Next Meeting, recorded in the West Kerry town of Dingle and produced by Donogh Hennessy. Festival appearances include the Austin Celtic Festival, the Maine Celtic Celebration, the Missoula Celtic Festival, KVMR Grass Valley Celtic Festival, Milwaukee Irish Festival, Bumbershoot, Celtic Connections, and over 20 years of performances at the Northwest Folklife Festival. Hanz has also been invited to perform with the Seattle Symphony, at the Gates Estate, and for the Japanese Consul General.
“…one of the best Irish flute players in the US…a brilliant vocalist as well with a cool, clear voice”
– Folk Alley
“Araki’s is a sweet-toned, sensitive yet deceptively powerful voice.”
– Boston Irish Reporter
“…a bold album full of incredible flute playing and great singing. The tune sets are relaxed and approached with a great sense of ease. Araki has a very solid singing voice and really does the songs he’s selected great justice.”
– The Irish Echo
“…his flute playing here shows just how deeply he is steeped in the Kerry background of his maternal ancestors. He sounds equally at home with Kerry polkas as some fast, straight ahead west of Ireland reels.”
– The Living Tradition
Dan Faiella has been building a reputation throughout New England’s traditional music communities for his sensitive and innovative interpretations of traditional tunes and songs from the Celtic traditions. His harp and banjo inspired approach to finger-style guitar playing brings both grace and energy to the music, and his skill as an accompanist for traditional melody players is increasingly in demand.
